Dish Placement for Salt-Air Homes: Where a Kommetjie Dish Should Really Go

On most Cape Town streets you can put a dish almost anywhere with line of sight. Within a few hundred metres of Long Beach, that is not true. Salt, wind and shade narrow the options down fast — and the wrong spot costs you a callout every winter.

Line of sight is the easy part

Every satellite installer starts from the same constraint: the dish needs an unobstructed view of Intelsat 20, which from Kommetjie sits roughly 51 degrees above the horizon on a bearing just north of east. Find a spot with that view and you have a working installation.

Find a spot with that view and shelter from the prevailing wind, and distance from direct salt spray, and safe ladder access for future servicing, and you have an installation that is still working in ten years. On the South Peninsula the second list is the one that decides your maintenance bill.

What salt air actually does to a dish

Kommetjie, Long Beach, Misty Cliffs and Scarborough sit in what corrosion engineers would call a severe marine atmosphere. Airborne chloride settles on every surface, and because it is hygroscopic it pulls moisture out of the air even on dry days. The result is a permanently damp, salty film on your hardware. In practice:

  • Painted mild steel brackets can show rust bleed within a single winter and structural rust within three to five years.
  • Ordinary crimp F-connectors corrode at the centre conductor, raising insertion loss long before they fail completely.
  • Unsealed LNB feed horns collect salt on the plastic cap, which then holds moisture right against the electronics.
  • Cheap PVC-jacketed coax goes chalky under UV, cracks, and lets salt water wick into the braid.

None of this is dramatic. It is slow, and it shows up as a signal quality figure that quietly slides from 80% to 65% over three years until the first serious front takes it to zero.

The four candidate positions, ranked for the coast

1. Sheltered gable or side wall — usually the winner

A wall-mounted dish on the leeward side of the house, under the eave line, is almost always the best coastal option. The wall carries the load, the eave gives partial rain shelter, and the dish sits out of the direct salt-laden gusts. As long as the aspect gives you a clear north-easterly view, this is where we want to be.

2. Roof-edge or fascia mount — workable, with caveats

Sometimes the only clear view is over the ridge. A properly engineered roof mount is fine, but it must be through-bolted into structure, not screwed into battens, and every penetration needs sealing correctly. It is also the position most exposed to wind loading, so bracket specification matters more here than anywhere else.

3. Ground-mounted pole — excellent if you have the space

An underrated option in larger Imhoff's Gift and Noordhoek plots. A concreted galvanised pole gives you total freedom of aim, easy servicing without a ladder, and it keeps the dish out of the worst of the roof-level turbulence. The trade-offs are cable run length and keeping the aim clear of future tree growth.

4. Seaward-facing front wall — avoid where possible

If your only viable spot faces directly into the prevailing spray, expect to service the installation more often. It can be done well, but it needs stainless fixings, a boot-sealed LNB and realistically a maintenance visit every 18 to 24 months.

Wind: the south-easter and the north-wester ask different questions

Kommetjie gets hammered from two directions. The summer south-easter is relentless and abrasive — it drives fine sand and salt into everything. The winter north-wester arrives in violent gusts with rain behind it, and that is what tests your bracket.

A standard 80cm offset dish presents roughly half a square metre of surface. In a 100km/h gust that is a meaningful load, and it is the gusting that does the damage: repeated flexing works fixings loose in a way that steady pressure does not. The practical answers are a short mast rather than a long one, a wall-mount rather than a cantilevered arm where possible, four fixings rather than two, and chemical anchors instead of plastic plugs in anything other than sound solid brick.

The materials that make the difference

This is where a cheap quote and a coastal-grade quote diverge, and it is worth understanding what you are paying for:

  • Hot-dip galvanised or 304/316 stainless brackets and fixings instead of painted mild steel. Never mix stainless bolts with untreated steel brackets — galvanic corrosion will eat the softer metal.
  • Quality RG6 with a UV-stable jacket and a proper foil-plus-braid screen. Cable is the cheapest part of the job and the most expensive to replace.
  • Compression F-connectors, not push-on or twist-on, sealed with self-amalgamating tape and finished with a weatherproof boot.
  • A drip loop below every connector and before every wall entry, so water runs off rather than tracking into the connection.
  • Sealed wall penetrations sloping downward to the outside, with a proper grommet.

Trees, neighbours and the things that change

Milkwoods grow. Fast-growing screening hedges grow faster. The neighbour's double-storey addition goes up. A signal path that is clear on installation day can be marginal in four years, which is one more reason to keep a written note of your peak signal quality reading — it turns "the DStv is being funny" into a measurable comparison.

If you are on a shared wall or in a complex around Sun Valley or Capri, check the body-corporate rules before you commit to a position. Retrofitting a dish to a different wall means new cable runs, new penetrations and new sealing — it is not a five-minute job.

Getting it right the first time

The honest summary is this: on this coast, placement and materials matter more than the brand of anything you buy. A well-sited, properly sealed installation using coastal-grade hardware will outlast two cheap ones and will not need a callout every winter.
