Dish Realignment, LNB Replacement & Cable Repair in Kommetjie
The maintenance work that keeps coastal DStv alive: wind-shifted dishes re-peaked, corroded LNBs swapped, perished cable replaced. Call-outs from R550.
Coastal Weather Is Hard on Satellite Kit. We're Harder.
A satellite dish in Kommetjie lives a tougher life than almost anywhere else in Cape Town. The south-easter hammers it all summer, winter fronts drive rain at it sideways, and every day the salt haze off Long Beach works on the metal, the bolts, and the electronics inside the LNB. The result is predictable: a system that was perfect at installation slowly drifts toward pixelation, weather-dependent dropouts, and eventually a blank screen. This page covers the maintenance services that reverse that drift — and the small upgrades we handle on the same visit.
Dish realignment. A dish only needs to move a few millimetres to lose meaningful signal, and Kommetjie wind moves dishes. We re-peak your dish against the satellite with a professional meter, reading signal quality on multiple transponders rather than eyeballing strength. Then we deal with the reason it moved: worn bolts are replaced, the mount is torqued and locked, and if the bracket itself has corroded we'll recommend a corrosion-resistant replacement so you're not calling us after the next blow.
LNB replacement. The LNB is the small unit on the dish arm that receives the actual signal, and it's the most weather-exposed electronic component in the whole system. Salt air gets into cheap or aging LNBs and they fail gradually — noise creeps in, channels drop out in clusters, rain-fade gets worse each season. We test the LNB's output properly, and when it's done, we fit a quality replacement matched to your setup: single, twin, quad, or smart LNB for Explora systems.
Cable and connector repair. RG6 cable and F-connectors are consumables on this coastline. UV perishes the outer sheath, moisture wicks into unsealed joints, and corroded connectors quietly strangle your signal. We replace damaged runs, re-terminate and weatherproof every joint with self-amalgamating tape, and route new cable neatly so it lasts.
Small Jobs, Same Visit
Because the call-out already covers the visit, most clients bundle the small extras: error code resolution on the decoder, an Explora Ultra set up and connected to Wi-Fi, an extra HD decoder installed in the spare room, or HDMI distribution so the deck TV mirrors the lounge. Tell us what's on the list when you book and we'll arrive with the right parts from Ocean View to Misty Cliffs.

Annual Maintenance for Coastal Homes and Rentals
For holiday homes around Slangkop and Imhoff's Gift and rental properties that must simply work when guests arrive, we offer annual maintenance plans: a scheduled inspection of dish, mount, LNB, and cabling before the season, with priority call-outs if anything fails in between. It's the cheapest insurance a coastal DStv system can have — every windy season proves it.
Maintenance Questions, Answered
The classic signs: picture pixelates or freezes in light wind or cloud, signal drops on some channels but not others, or an E48-32 error after a storm. If the problems started after a big blow, a shifted dish is the most likely cause.
Usually 30 to 45 minutes on-site, including meter-testing the full chain and securing the mount so it holds. If we find a failed LNB or perished cable while we're up there, we'll quote you on the spot before replacing anything.
Salt-laden air is corrosive and finds its way into the LNB housing and connector threads, degrading the electronics and the joint. Within a kilometre of the beach — most of Kommetjie — a standard LNB simply ages faster. Quality units, properly sealed connections, and periodic checks stretch the lifespan considerably.
Where the rest of the run is healthy, yes — we join with proper weatherproofed connectors, never taped twists. But if the cable is perished along its length (common on north-facing walls that take full sun), a full replacement run costs little more and removes every future weak point.
