You switch on the bedroom TV and the second box says there's no communication from primary decoder. The picture is gone, but the lounge decoder plays fine. In Kommetjie this usually comes down to power, a loose link cable or salt on a connector, and most of it you can check in ten minutes.
Quick answer
XtraView shows this message when the secondary box stops hearing from the primary decoder. There's no communication from it because the main box is off, a cable between them is loose or corroded, or the link dropped after a power cut. Switch the primary on, restart both boxes and firm up the cables. If it returns, the link cable needs testing.
What no communication from the primary decoder means
XtraView links two or three decoders on one subscription, as our guide on how XtraView works explains. The main box, called the primary, sends a regular check-in signal to the other box. DStv calls this signal the heartbeat.
When that signal stops, the secondary decoder locks its picture. DStv's own help pages say the secondary will not work if the primary is switched off, removed, or if the heartbeat is cut by interference or a cabling fault. The primary keeps working either way.
So the message is not a broken box in most cases. It's the second decoder telling you it lost contact with the first one. Some people call it a DStv heartbeat error, and you may also see the words "waiting for communication from primary decoder".
Why there's no communication from the primary decoder in Kommetjie homes
We see the same handful of causes again and again on the Atlantic side of the peninsula. Here's what tends to trigger it.
The primary decoder was switched off at the wall
This is the big one in holiday homes and rentals. A guest leaves, someone switches everything off at the plug, and the next visitor finds the bedroom TV dead. The primary must have power for the secondary to work.
Power cuts and surges
After a power cut, both boxes restart at different speeds. Sometimes the secondary comes up first and gives up waiting. A surge can also damage the port that carries the link, which is a job for a technician.
Salt air on the link cable connectors
Sea mist off Long Beach gets into everything. Over time the F-connectors on the cable between rooms go green and crusty, and the heartbeat struggles to get through. Homes close to the beach in Kommetjie village and Misty Cliffs see this sooner than those further inland.
Cables bumped or moved
Moving a TV cabinet, a new TV wall mounting job or a dog chewing a cable behind the couch can all pull a connector half out. It only needs to be a little loose to drop the link.
No communication from your primary decoder: causes and fixes
| Likely cause | What you notice | What you can safely try |
|---|---|---|
| Primary off at the plug | Lounge decoder dark, bedroom box shows the message | Switch the primary on and wait for it to finish starting |
| Power cut out of order | Message appears right after the power returns | Restart the primary first, then the secondary |
| Loose cable at a decoder | Problem started after furniture moved | Push connectors home by hand, finger tight |
| Corroded connectors | Comes and goes, worse on misty days | Book a cable and connector check |
| Account not linked | New setup that never worked properly | Check XtraView on your DStv account |
Five checks before you call anyone
Work through these in order. Each one takes a minute or two.
- Check the primary decoder is on and showing a normal picture on its own TV.
- Switch the secondary decoder off at the plug, wait a minute and switch it back on.
- If that fails, switch both off. Turn the primary on first, let it fully load, then switch on the secondary.
- Look at the back of both boxes. Gently press each round cable connector so it's snug, without unscrewing anything.
- Open the MyDStv app or your account to confirm it's paid up and that XtraView is linked.
Good to know
Both decoders in XtraView must carry the same package. DStv's help page on primary and secondary roles also suggests making an Explora the primary, so recordings aren't lost if the link breaks.

Holiday homes, estates and the empty-house problem
Plenty of homes in Klein Slangkop, Imhoff's Gift and Capri sit empty for weeks. When the owners come back, the second TV often shows the message. Usually the primary was switched off, or a power cut tripped the plug point and nobody reset it.
If you rent your place out, leave a short note next to the lounge decoder: "Please keep this box on, it runs the bedroom TV." Our holiday rental DStv checklist has more ideas for keeping guests happy.
In estates, cable runs between rooms can be long and pass through roof spaces. Mice, heat and damp take their toll, and we're often called to replace a run that looked fine from the outside.
Safety first
Don't climb into the roof or onto ladders to trace the link cable, and don't open either decoder. Keep your checks to the plugs and connectors you can reach at the back of the boxes.
When XtraView not working needs a technician
If the steps above don't clear it, or it keeps coming back, the problem is likely in the cabling or a decoder port. That's where a proper test helps.
- The message returns every few days, especially on damp, misty mornings.
- The primary has its own fault, like no signal or an E48-32 code.
- You recently had a surge or lightning nearby.
- The setup is new and has never linked properly.

No communication from primary decoder: FAQs
What causes no communication from primary decoder on DStv?
The secondary box has lost the check-in signal from the main decoder. Most often the primary is off at the plug, a cable between the boxes is loose, or a power cut restarted them in the wrong order. Corroded connectors and damaged cable runs cause the stubborn cases.
How do I fix extra view not working?
Make sure the primary decoder is on with a normal picture. Then switch both boxes off, start the primary first and let it load before switching on the secondary. Press the cable connectors snug at the back. If it still fails, ask a technician to test the link cable.
Does the primary decoder need to stay on for XtraView?
Yes. It needs power for the secondary box to work, because the secondary relies on its regular check-in signal. Switching it off at the wall drops the link and locks the second TV until the main box is back on.
Why does XtraView in Kommetjie keep showing no communication from the primary decoder?
Near the sea, salt mist slowly corrodes the connectors on the cable between rooms. The link then drops on and off, often worse on damp mornings. Sealed connectors and a fresh cable run usually sort it out for good.
What is the DStv heartbeat error?
It's the name people use when the secondary decoder in XtraView stops receiving the regular signal from the primary decoder. The screen then shows a waiting or no communication message instead of a picture until the link returns.
