Catch Up Not Working? Connect DStv Explora to WiFi Properly

Catch Up showing nothing new, or downloads that never start, nearly always trace back to the internet link rather than the dish. Before you blame the decoder, check how you connect DStv Explora to WiFi in your home, because a weak or forgotten link quietly switches off every online feature. In Kommetjie we see this most after a router swap or a long spell with the house empty.

Quick answer

Press Help on the remote, open Tools and run the Connectivity Checker. If either tick is missing, rerun Connectivity Set-up, pick your network and type the password again. Then switch Connected Services on. Once you connect your DStv Explora to WiFi properly, Catch Up usually comes back within minutes.

First fix: run the Connectivity Checker

This one test tells you more than any amount of guessing. Press the Help button at the bottom right of your remote, choose Tools, then Connectivity Checker and press OK. DStv says you should see two green ticks, one for the router and one for the internet.

  • Both ticks green: the link is fine, so jump to the Connected Services section below.
  • Router tick missing: the decoder can't reach your router at all. Rerun the set-up or check the cable.
  • Internet tick missing: the decoder reaches the router, but the router isn't online. Restart the router and test your phone on the same network.

Our earlier post on how Catch Up works locally explains what the service shows and why some titles drop off after a while.

Is the Catch Up problem really the WiFi?

Live channels come down from the satellite, while Catch Up, Box Office and remote recordings travel over your internet line. That split helps you find the fault fast.

What you seeMost likely causeWhat to try first

If live TV is also playing up, the internet fix won't help. Strong north-westers can knock a dish off its mark, and our dish realignment service sorts that out.

How to connect your DStv Explora to WiFi properly

Most standard Explora boxes need the DStv WiFi connector for Explora decoders, a small adapter that sits in its own docking station. DStv's setup steps are simple, and the order matters.

  1. Make sure the router is on and your phone can browse on it.
  2. Stand the docking station beside the Explora, not on top of it.
  3. Plug the dock's cable into one of the USB ports at the back of the decoder.
  4. Slot the connector into the dock and wait for its light to glow white.
  5. The set-up wizard should open by itself. Choose your network and press OK twice.
  6. Type the password with the remote's keypad, or press ALT for the onscreen keyboard.
  7. Let the Explora test the link before you do anything else.

Using a network cable instead

If the router sits in the same room, DStv calls a cable the most stable option. Plug one end into the green Ethernet port on the Explora and the other into any free port on the router. Nothing else in the house can interfere with it.

What about the Explora Ultra?

The Explora Ultra has WiFi built in, so there's no dock or adapter. You simply pick your network in its settings and enter the password. Not sure which box you own? Our decoder comparison for local homes shows the differences.

Why Kommetjie homes struggle to connect a DStv Explora to WiFi

Many houses near Long Beach and in Kommetjie village are low and spread out, with the router in a study at one end and the TV at the other. WiFi weakens through every wall it crosses. A dock tucked behind a TV cabinet hears even less.

Holiday homes and rentals in Klein Slangkop and Imhoff's Gift often get a new LTE router between visits, and the Explora keeps looking for the old network. Further along, in Capri, Sunnydale and Ocean View, we often find routers switched off at the wall to save power while nobody's home.

Technician tip

Ask your internet provider to keep the old WiFi name and password when they swap a router. The decoder, TVs and phones then reconnect on their own, and Catch Up never notices the change.

If the signal simply won't reach the lounge, our WiFi and network setup team can run a cable or add a mesh point beside the TV.

Turn on Connected Services, or Catch Up stays dark

This catches out plenty of people. DStv ships the Explora with Connected Services switched off, so a perfect connection can still show nothing.

Press the big blue DStv button and go to Settings, User Preferences, then Connected Services. Turn on the features you want. Hover over each one and the decoder explains what it does.

The speed you need after you connect your DStv Explora to WiFi

DStv recommends an uncapped line, because Catch Up and streaming use a lot of data. Test the speed on your phone while standing right next to the decoder, not beside the router.

  • At least 2Mbps for downloads and remote recording.
  • At least 4Mbps to stream in SD.
  • Around 10Mbps or more to stream in HD.

If the weekend house in Scarborough or Misty Cliffs runs on a small LTE bundle, watch your data balance. A big Catch Up download can eat it faster than you expect.

Safety first

Don't climb onto a roof or a wobbly ladder to reach the dish or a router on a high shelf. Switch off at the wall before you unplug anything from a crowded multiplug, and never open the decoder.

Still no Catch Up? Let a local technician look

If you've rerun the set-up, the checker shows two ticks and Connected Services is on, yet Catch Up still won't load, the decoder itself may need attention. Our DStv Explora installation team checks the box, the dock and the link in one visit. For the bigger picture, see our DStv installation in Kommetjie page.

If this doesn't fix it, call a technician rather than resetting the decoder over and over. Book a visit with our team and we'll quote before we drive out.

Connect DStv Explora to WiFi: FAQs

Why is Catch Up not working on my Explora?

Usually the decoder has lost its internet link or Connected Services is switched off. Run the Connectivity Checker under Help and Tools. If a tick is missing, rerun Connectivity Set-up and enter your WiFi password again.

Can DStv Explora connect to WiFi on its own?

The Explora Ultra can, because WiFi is built in. Older Explora models need the DStv WiFi connector and its docking station, or a network cable from the router into the green Ethernet port at the back.

How do I connect DStv Explora to WiFi after a power cut?

Give the router a few minutes to come fully back online first. Then restart the Explora and run the Connectivity Checker. If it still fails, rerun Connectivity Set-up and pick your network again.

Will Catch Up work on an LTE router in Kommetjie?

It can, as long as the line is fast enough at the TV. DStv asks for at least 4Mbps for SD and about 10Mbps for HD, and recommends an uncapped connection, so keep an eye on your data bundle.

Does live TV stop if the WiFi goes down?

No. Live channels come from the satellite, so they keep playing. Only the online extras, like Catch Up, Box Office and remote recordings, stop until the internet link is back.
