DStv Business Packages Explained for First-Time Owners

Just opened a B&B, a surf-side café or a small office in Kommetjie and want TV for guests or staff? DStv business packages work differently from the account you have at home, and your first month runs smoother if you know the basics. Here's the plain version, from the team that installs these systems on this stretch of coast.

Quick answer

DStv business packages are commercial subscriptions you sign directly with MultiChoice. You choose a group to match your premises: guest rooms, public areas or offices. The monthly fee is charged per TV by debit order, and you hire your own installer for the dish and wiring. Billing starts once the service is switched on after installation.

Home account or business account: the main differences

Most new owners start with the decoder they already know from home. The catch is that a home subscription is meant for a private household. MultiChoice's business terms even say some home services aren't open to business accounts at all.

If you only let out a cottage now and then, our holiday rental DStv checklist covers the home side. A proper guesthouse with paying guests in several rooms is a business, and that's what this guide is about.

The three groups of DStv business packages

DStv sorts its business offer by the kind of place you run. Getting the group right matters more than the tier, because each group's channels are cleared for a different kind of viewing.

Accommodation with rooms for sleeping

This group is for guesthouses, B&Bs, hotels, retirement villages and clinics. Its channels are for in-room viewing only. The terms say they may not be shown in a public lounge or bar.

Public venues

This one is for cafés, restaurants, pubs and shops, anywhere people eat, drink or relax in shared space. A café in the village with a screen over the counter would sit here.

Workplaces

This group covers offices, schools, banks and reception areas. It's what most people picture when they ask about a DStv office package: one or two screens in a waiting area or staff room.

Each group has its own channel list, and the brochure says its lists were correct as at September 2026. For the latest lineup, see the DStv Business packages page.

Who you pay, and for what

A lot of first-time owners think the installer sells the subscription. We don't. Two separate agreements are involved, and knowing which is which saves confusion when the first bills arrive.

  • MultiChoice: the monthly DStv business subscription, per TV, for the group and tier you picked.
  • Your installer: the dish, LNB, cabling, decoder setup and any wall mounting, as a once-off job.
  • The decoders: the terms say they become yours once they're paid for in full.

MultiChoice suggests using approved installers, and its terms describe every installer as an independent contractor. Ask how an installer works and what they stand behind before you sign. Our post on choosing an accredited installer lists good questions.

Paperwork for your first DStv business packages application

The application is a form you fill in, sign and email to the DStv Business team with your supporting documents. The brochure asks for these:

  • Company registration documents
  • A VAT registration notice, if you're registered for VAT
  • An ID document if you trade as a sole proprietor
  • A signed payment instruction for the monthly debit order

Once MultiChoice has the form, they get in touch and open the account. The terms say they may check your credit standing first, so make sure the details are accurate.

Installing on the Kommetjie coast

Salt mist off the Atlantic is the main enemy of a business system here. Cheap brackets rust, and one corroded connector can drop the signal to every room at once. We use weatherproofed fittings and brackets that cope with sea air, as our guide to salt-air dish placement explains.

Wind comes next. North-westers in winter and the summer south-easter push on a dish all year, so we fix it into solid masonry and align it on a signal meter. A guesthouse in Klein Slangkop or Imhoff's Gift may also have estate rules about where a dish can go.

Feeding many rooms from one dish

A B&B with six or eight rooms needs a plan for getting signal to each one. The application form lists two options: a decoder in each room, or a head-end system that feeds many screens. Larger setups often look a lot like our communal DStv systems.

Safety first

Low coastal roofs look easy, but salt makes tiles and sheeting slippery and gusts come off the sea without warning. Please don't send staff up a ladder to nudge the dish. Leave roof work to a trained technician.

Billing and changes to your DStv business package

Fees are charged per TV, so adding a screen in the breakfast room adds to the monthly bill. The debit order goes off on the first day of each month.

An upgrade applies straight away, while a downgrade only kicks in at the end of the current billing period. Either side can end the agreement with thirty days' written notice. Seasonal places in Scarborough or Misty Cliffs should talk to MultiChoice about options well before winter.

Our side is a once-off cost. At the time of writing, a simple single-screen install budgets from around R850 to R1,400, and bigger multi-room jobs from around R1,500 to R2,400. Ask our team for a current quote.

First-year mistakes to avoid

  1. Playing in-room channels on the lounge or breakfast-room TV.
  2. Declaring fewer TVs than you run. MultiChoice may inspect and charge the difference.
  3. Putting your logo, specials or adverts over the channel picture, which the terms don't allow.
  4. Moving to new premises without telling MultiChoice in writing.
  5. Saving on outdoor fittings, then paying for a repair after the first winter.

Many owners sort guest internet in the same visit. We handle WiFi and network setup too, along with TV wall mounting for each room.

DStv business packages: FAQs

What is a DStv business package?

It's a MultiChoice subscription for premises that show DStv to guests, customers or staff. It's grouped by venue type, with separate options for accommodation, public venues and workplaces. The fee is charged for each TV, and the account is opened by MultiChoice after you apply.

How do I apply for DStv business packages?

The application form is in the DStv for Business brochure on the DStv website. Fill it in and sign the payment instruction. Email it with your company registration documents, VAT notice if you have one, or your ID if you're a sole proprietor. MultiChoice then contacts you to open the account.

Do I need a DStv business account for a guesthouse in Kommetjie?

If you run a guesthouse or B&B with paying guests in their rooms, yes. MultiChoice's accommodation group is meant for places with rooms for sleeping. If you only let out a holiday home now and then, ask MultiChoice which account fits before we install.

How are DStv business packages billed?

You pay a monthly fee for every TV on the account, so more screens means a bigger bill. MultiChoice collects it by debit order on the first day of each month, starting once the service is switched on after installation.

Can I cancel a DStv business subscription?

Yes. The DStv for Business terms let either side end the agreement with thirty days' written notice. If you only want to pay less, a downgrade takes effect at the end of your current billing period, so plan ahead of a quiet season.
